About Me


Waterloo Catholic District School Board Involvement:
I serve as an Elementary Schools Chaplain for 23 of the 45 elementary schools of the Waterloo Catholic District School Board.  I am involved with the Grade 8 residential retreat program, supporting the schools and parishes with sacramental preparation and liturgy preparation, and responding to pastoral situations as they arise.

Experience:
I was a teacher at Niagara Catholic Jr Sr High School in Niagara Falls, New York from the fall of 2010 until December 2014. I taught a number of courses at Niagara Catholic including: US History and Government 11, Participation in Government and Civics 12, Economics 12, Global Studies 9, Religion 9, 10, 11, Current Events, Sociology, Psychology, Introduction to Criminal Justice (Niagara University Senior Term Enrichment Program - NUSTEP). I spent some of my time at Niagara Catholic serving as the Class Moderator for the Class of 2013 and the Class of 2016, the Academic Coach for athletes, Ski Club Moderator, one of the coaches of the JV Girls Basketball Team, Social Studies Department Chair, and the Internal Coordinator for the Middle States Accreditation process.  Prior to teaching at Niagara Catholic Jr. Sr. High School, I worked as a couple and family therapist helping adolescents and families who were experiencing difficulties getting along. I have worked as the Director of Training for a large community counseling agency where I was responsible for teaching counselors and therapists how to work with couples and families. I have been the Executive Director of a community counseling agency and I have spent some time as a professor at the university level teaching counseling psychology courses to graduate students. I have worked in the field of special education as a competitive employment coordinator and social worker in a community agency focused on assisting adults with developmental challenges live as independently as possible.  I have experience in both youth ministry and religious education. I served as the Director of Youth Ministry for the Diocese of Cheyenne - the diocese covers the entire state of Wyoming. And I was the Director of Religious Education for a large parish in North Dakota.

Volunteer Positions (Recent/Present)
I am a volunteer with the Department of Youth and Young Adult Ministry of the Diocese of Buffalo where I have served as a team member of the annual Christian Leadership Institute (CLI) and as a member with various Youth Convention committees. I also served a three year term as a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Learner Centered Education. In addition to serving as a board member I have been a team member of the summer education conference sponsored by the Institute. I am active in the Worshipping Community at St. Jerome's University serving as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector and as a member of the Campus Ministry Advisory Group.

Personal:
My wife, Lucia Hogeveen, is a fabric artist and a kindergarten teacher with the Waterloo Catholic District School Board.  We have one son, Caelin, who is in the first year of his master’s degree in architecture at the University of Waterloo.  I enjoy spending some of my time away from school reading, biking, skiing, camping, and racing the occasional triathlon.
